Below are my top 5 blogging best practices that you can use in your own blog writing strategy.

Tip #1 – Be Consistent and Post Weekly

Nothing is less useful than a blog where the most recent post is months old. Visitors to blogs are looking for real-time information, so that makes blogs more time-sensitive than pages of your website that live on and on. It is so important to schedule and maintain regular posts so that visitors have a reason to visit to see “what’s new” or “what’s changed”. Try to post once a week so that search engines find fresh content every few days your site is re-indexed.

Tip #2 – Drive Traffic through Social Media

Use your social media resources to announce new posts. People online today are more likely to follow a link from their Twitter or Facebook news feeds than RSS feeds of the past. Use this to your advantage by posting links to new blog posts on any social media platforms you have.

Tip #3 – Bring “Real World” Info into Your Blog

If there’s ever a situation where the news cycle is focusing on a story that is directly related to you or your business, you should talk about it – on your blog. This is a perfect time to talk about how your products or services are designed or how the process works.

Tip #4.0, 4.1, 4.2 – Include Keywords, Pictures and Links

Although keyword data isn’t as clearly available as it once was, it is still important and it is still a factor for SE’s to determine where and how your blog posts should show up. Make it easier for them by including your keywords in your blog title, body copy, alt text, and meta descriptions.

Also, images, pictures, and embedded video are all ways to entice readers to engage with your website and your blogs are no different. Include an image with your blog posts whenever possible – even if it’s not an exact match – people like pictures! Use keywords in your body content to link to additional information either on your website or in archived blog posts. Don’t be afraid to link to someone else’s website. There are so many great resources out there – share!

Tip #5 – Content Length

A good blog has a nice mix of lengths. The hard and fast rule is to offer at least 200 words and to stop around 400-500 words. If you have more than that because you are a crazy writing fool, you probably have enough to write a series of blogs. That is actually one of the best ways to engage your readers to come back and read Parts 2, 3, etc.
